Origins and introduction

The Chair was created on 10 November 2007. It is attached to the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy) and is located within the Institut des Droits de l’Homme (IDHL, the Institute for Human Rights).

The Chair exists to advance education, research, information, documentation and international networking, thus promoting cross-cultural links.

The UNESCO Chair in Memory, Cultures and Interculturality was created on the basis of over 20 years' experience of university teaching, interdisciplinary research and international and intercultural exchanges organised by the IDHL since its establishment in 1985.

The Chair is run by a team of university lecturers who come from a variety of disciplines and cultural backgrounds.  Their teaching and research work brings them into contact with intercultural and interreligious issues on a daily basis.
